Man fighting for life after being run over while ‘sleeping’ on road

A MAN is in a critical condition in hospital after being run over by a car in Townsville overnight.

The 32-year-old was reportedly lying on the road at the intersection of Bayswater Road and Barnett Street in Mount Louisa when he was run over around 3.20am.

Police said the woman behind the wheel of the car swerved to avoid the man but he got up and inadvertently walked into the path of her car.

District duty officer Acting Senior Sergeant Craig Hosie told the Townsville Bulletin the man appeared to have been sleeping on the road.

“A female motorist has been driving when all of a sudden he’s sat up,” he told the publication.

“She’s steered the car to avoid him but he’s gotten up and in his inebriated state has walked into the path of the vehicle and she’s hit him.”

The man sustained life-threatening injuries and was rushed to Townsville Hospital where he remains this afternoon in a critical condition after undergoing surgery.

The Forensic Crash Unit are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
