Man fights for life after shopping centre explosion

A MAN has spent the night in a critical condition in hospital with burns to 50 per cent of his body after being caught up in an explosion at a shopping centre in Sydney’s Inner West.

Emergency services were called to reports of a gas explosion at the Ashfield Mall shopping centre on Liverpool Road in Ashfield around 5pm on Friday.

It’s understood the incident took place in a storeroom in an underground car park.

Police and paramedics arrived to find a man in his 30s with extensive burns to his arms, face and legs.

He was rushed to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in a critical condition.

The mall was evacuated while firefighters assessed the scene.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
