A MAN is fighting to stay alive in hospital following a horror crash in the NSW Hunter Region this morning.

The crash occurred on the Pacific Highway north of Old Punt Road in the Port Stephens suburb of Tomago around 11am.

He was rushed by ambulance to the John Hunter Hospital where he remains this afternoon in critical condition.

Heavy delays are being experienced for traffic heading south along the highway between Tomago and Old Punt roads while the Crash Investigation Unit examines the scene.
