Man found carrying machine gun at Sydney shopping centre

A man has been caught carrying a machine gun at a major shopping centre in Sydney’s inner west.

Marc Avidov was stopped by police in the carpark of Marrickville Metro at lunchtime on Wednesday.

Following a search of his bag, officers located a Thompson-brand fully automatic sub-machine gun,148 rounds of .22 calibre ammunition and 44 shotgun shells.

The 41-year-old was charged with possessing an unregistered and prohibited firearm, acquiring a firearm without a licence or permit and possessing ammunition without holding a licence.

Avidov appeared in Newtown Local Court on Thursday afternoon where he did not apply for bail and it was formally refused.

He will return to court next Thursday.
