Man found dead on back patio after pub brawl

UPDATE at 4:45 PM | A MAN who was found dead in the backyard of his house in a sleepy cul-de-sac on the Gold Coast had injuries consistent with being assaulted, police have revealed.

The 21-year-old’s body was found by a family member on the back patio of his Soma Court home at Mudgeeraba around 9.30am on Saturday.

Detectives said the victim had been involved in a violent altercation with a group of up to seven men at the nearby Wallaby Hotel around 10.30pm the night before.

Speaking to reporters at Burleigh Heads Police Station on Saturday afternoon, Detective Inspector Marc Hogan said the young man’s body had “obvious injuries”.

Detective Inspector Hogan said the 21-year-old returned to his house shortly after the altercation where he “had some alcohol” and fell asleep.

“It appears that the deceased male person was involved in some sort of altercation [at the hotel] with another group of males…we think there were about seven.

“Following that, he returned back into the hotel with his friends and later returned home.

“He’s had some alcohol at home and he was located this morning deceased.

“The victim has obvious injuries consistent with assault,” he said.

Detective Inspector Hogan said investigators were working to identify the men involved in the altercation at the Wallaby Hotel, just two kilometres away from the victim’s home.

A kids park and playground situated immediately next the pub was taped off and examined by detectives on Saturday morning.

The victim’s home was declared a crime scene and was still crawling with detectives and forensic police seven hours after the gruesome discovery.

It has been reported that the victim’s parents are currently out of the country, holidaying in Fiji.
