Man in induced coma after crashing motorbike during police pursuit

A man is in an induced coma after crashing his motorbike following a police pursuit in Sydney’s Inner West this morning.

About 12.15am Monday 14 September 2015, police from Burwood Local Area Command were patrolling Harris Road, Five Dock, when a motorbike drove past at high speed.

Police attempted to stop the motorbike but the rider failed to stop.

A police pursuit was initiated and a short time later as the bike was travelling south on Great North Road, the rider lost control near Henry Street.

Ambulance Paramedics treated the 37-year-old male rider at the scene for abrasions to his stomach, knees, arms, elbows and hands, before taking him to Royal Price Alfred Hospital. The rider was not wearing a helmet or shoes at the time of the crash.

Police were told the rider was later placed in an induced coma to allow further treatment. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Inquiries are continuing.
