Man in induced coma after alleged brutal assault in Surfers Paradise

UPDATE @ 4.00PM | A man has fronted court charged over an alleged assault in Surfers Paradise that has left his victim in a coma.

Rickey Lefoe, 27, is accused of punching a 29-year-old Tugun man on Orchid Ave around 1am knocking him unconscious.

Police allege the man was sitting on a bench when he was approached by two others who stole some of his food.

He then fell to the ground and hit his head, causing a significant head injury.

He remains in hospital in a serious condition in an induced coma.

Detective Acting Inspector Greg Aubort says it appears to be an unprovoked attack.

“As far as we know, and inquiries will continue, but as far as we’re aware they were unknown to each other prior to this,” Det Acting Insp Aubort said.

“There is no evidence of provocation, there’s no evidence of buying into this, there’s just evidence of reacting.”

Lefoe will remain behind bars until tomorrow when he’s expected to apply for bail.

Police insist Surfers Paradise remains a safe place despite the alleged incident.

“The reality is often with these offences it starts with the most innocuous event, whether it’s pinching a bit of food or a throwaway comment.

“I think that’s the message we want to get across as we approach the summer season, our entertainment precincts are safe night precincts, we invest a lot of time and resources into those areas.”

EARLIER @ 7.00AM | A man is in a serious condition in hospital this morning after an allegedly assault in Surfers Paradise overnight.

The 29-year-old Tugun man was allegedly attacked around 1.10am.

It’s understood he was sitting on a bench with friends when two men approached and took some of their food.

An altercation then broke out, where the 29-year-old was punched, causing him to lose consciousness and fall.

His head then hit the concrete, causing a significant head injury.

Emergency services were called to the scene, where paramedics treated the man briefly before rushing him to the Gold Coast University Hospital in a serious condition.

Police have confirmed they’ve arrested a 27-year-old man in relation to the incident.

He’s been charged with one count of grievous bodily harm and is due to front Southport Court today.
