Man injured after explosive device blows up on Gold Coast street

A man has suffered superficial burns after an unknown object exploded in his hands at Southport this morning.

The man is believed to have been walking his dog when he came across the suspicious device in a carpark on Edmond Rice Drive just after 9.30am.

Police say the man told officers he picked up the object, which then allegedly blew up in his hands.

He was treated by paramedics for minor burns to his stomach and hips, however didn’t require transport to hospital.

The Explosive Ordnance Response Team (EORT) rushed to the scene and quickly deemed the device inert.

A police spokesperson told myGC there is no risk to public safety.

Investigations are continuing.
