Man killed after light plane crashes into NSW backyard

A man has died following a horror light plane crash in the NSW Hunter region.

Emergency services were called to a property on Denton Close in Windella around 10.15am today, after reports a light plane had crashed into a backyard.

The pilot, who was the only person on board the aircraft, was pulled from the wreckage by witnesses.

Despite desperate attempts to resuscitate him, he died at the scene.

Police say he is yet to be formally identified but is believed to be a 44-year-old man.

A crime scene has been established with investigations into the crash now underway.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau and the Civil Aviation Safety Authority have been notified.
