Police say a car veered off Wilfred Barrett Drive at Magenta and hit a tree just after 11am on Saturday.

The driver, a man whose age is not yet known, was critically injured in the collision.

He was treated by paramedics at the scene but sadly could not be saved.

In a statement released this afternoon, police confirmed the man died before he could be transported to hospital.

Wilfred Barrett Drive was declared a crime scene and examined by the forensic crash unit.

Investigations into what caused the man the veer off the road and crash are continuing.
