Man killed in NSW unit explosion

A MAN has been killed in an explosion at a unit block in Ballina overnight which has left the building structurally unsafe.

Police said emergency services were called to Owen Street shortly after 7.30pm on Friday.

A ground level unit and two second storey units were located well alight.

Residents of the unit block were evacuated to a nearby oval and Fire & Rescue NSW extinguished the blaze.

After the fire was defeated, the body of a man was located near the rear door of a unit.

He is yet to be formally identified.

The building is structurally unsound and cannot be entered.

There appears to be no suspicious circumstances, however the cause of the explosion is yet to be determined.
