Man left fighting for life after brutal assault

A WOOLWORTHS worker is fighting for his life in hospital following a brutal, unprovoked attack in Sydney’s west overnight.

The 44-year-old was found unconscious with critical head wounds at a unit block on Fairmount Street in Lakemba around 1.50am.

It’s believed the man was walking home from working a late shift when he was bludgeoned from behind.

He was treated by paramedics at the scene before being rushed to St George Hospital where police say he remains today in a critical but stable condition.

“It’s a horrendous crime. The victim is currently in hospital in an induced coma,” NSW Police Inspector Rick Agius told 9NEWS.

“Striking someone on the head from behind is a very callous, very horrendous offence.”

Police are investigating whether the attack was a robbery after it was revealed the victim’s mobile phone many have been stolen.

The Fairmount Street building was declared a crime scene and examined by forensic police on Saturday morning.

Investigators are urging anyone who saw the man before he was found injured and or witnessed an assault in the nearby area to come forward.
