Man loses hand in explosion while allegedly trying to build a rocket

A man has had his hand blown off after an experiment went horribly wrong at a home in Brisbane.

Paramedics were called to a home in Chermside West just before 8am after reports of an explosion.

Neighbours say they heard a man screaming shortly after hearing a loud bang,

Paramedics arrived to find a man in his 40s in the lower part of the house.

Queensland Ambulance Senior Operations Supervisor Brad Hardy said the man was seriously injured.

“He has suffered significant, traumatic injuries to his arm, he has an amputation to his right hand, also has a compound fracture of his left leg,” Mr Hardy said.

“He also has abrasive injuries from the explosion to his chest and abdomen, but at this stage they’re not life threatening.”

The man was taken to Royal Brisbane Hospital in a serious condition.

It’s known not exactly what caused the explosion or what chemicals were used but there are reports the man was attempting to make a homemade rocket.

“It’s a perfect reminder don’t be playing with chemicals, mixing chemicals, even just your household chemicals can cause sign injuries from explosions and detonations and fireworks at this time of year can be extremely dangerous to play with,” Mr Hardy said.
