Man pulled from burning house with critical injuries, police say

A man has suffered critical injuries after allegedly being bashed and left to burn to death inside his home which had been set alight on Victoria’s Bellarine Peninsula overnight.

Emergency services were called to the house ablaze on Bunganowee Drive just after 11.30pm where the man was found trapped inside the burning building.

He was rescued and pulled out of the inferno by fire fighters.

Critically injured, the man was rushed to a Melbourne hospital.

Police believe the man may have been savagely assaulted before his house was set alight.

“Detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident and believe the man suffered not only burns from the fire but are investigating that he was also assaulted,” police said in a statement.

Officers arrested a 45-year-old man nearby the scene. He is currently assisting detectives with their enquiries.

No charges have been laid.
