Man seriously burnt in explosion at yacht club

A MAN has been seriously injured in an explosion on a boat south of Newcastle.

The vessel was moored at the Lake Macquarie Yacht Club in Belmont when it burst into flames just after 1pm.

A 59-year-old man who was on the boat at the time of the explosion sustained severe burns to his face and hands.

It’s understood the man owns the boat and was cleaning the vessel when it exploded.

He was treated by paramedics at the scene before being rushed to Newcastle’s John Hunter Hospital in a serious condition.

Witnesses have told NBN News the boat exploded into a “fireball”.

The yacht club was evacuated as a precaution while firefighters fought the blaze, which totally destroyed the boat.

Officers from the Marine Area Command and Lake Macquarie Police District are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
