It appears a wide load truck with escort vehicles front and rear was travelling northbound near the Chris Evans Overpass when the rear escort vehicle, a Ford Falcon, was struck by a northbound refrigerated truck.

As a result the Falcon was forced into the rear of the wide load vehicle and the driver was trapped.

He was eventually released and taken to Liverpool Hospital with multiple fractures and internal injuries.

The highway has been reduced to one lane northbound and the investigation will continue until at least 8am.

Motorists are urged to avoid the area or delay their trip.

Police are urging anyone who witnessed the crash to come forward and contact police.

What on earth is an escorted wide load doing on the highway at 2.45am. Asking for trouble if you ask me.
