Investigations underway after Gold Coast man shot dead by police in Brisbane

UPDATE @ February 26, 6:30 AM | INVESTIGATIONS are continuing after a Gold Coast man was shot dead by police during a confrontation with officers in Brisbane on Sunday.

The 31-year-old was shot after allegedly lunging at officers with a knife in the affluent suburb of Wakerley, in the city’s east, around 9.50am.

It’s understood the man had earlier been trying to break into a home and was threatening the occupants inside.

Police and a fellow neighbour performed CPR on the man in the street before he was rushed to Princess Alexandra Hospital where he died.

The Ethical Standards Command is investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting on behalf of the State Coroner.

EARLIER at 2:20 PM | A MAN who was shot by police during a confrontation with officers in Brisbane has died in hospital, police have confirmed.

The man has been identified as a 31-year-old from the Gold Coast.

He was shot by police after allegedly lunging at them with a knife in the affluent suburb of Wakerley, in the city’s east, around 9.50am.

Police said the “enraged” man had been trying to break into a home on Goulburn Street and was threatening the occupants inside.

They called police, fearing for their lives.

Officers arrived on the scene within minutes and tried to taser the man but were forced to retreat when that didn’t work.

Speaking to reporters at the scene, police said the man then turned on the first responding officers.

It’s alleged the man followed the officers as they retreated 50-60 metres down the road and threatened them while brandishing the knife.

That’s when one officer drew his gun and opened fire, police said.

The officer fired two shots, critically wounding the man.

Police and a fellow neighbour performed CPR on the man in the street before he was rushed to Princess Alexandra Hospital.

He was transported in a critical condition with life-threatening gunshot wounds.

Police confirmed the Gold Coast man had since succumbed to his injuries and died in hospital.

The man knew the people inside the house and was known to police.

It was earlier reported that police were responding to a domestic violence-related incident at the house.

Police confirmed no officers were injured during the ordeal.

No further information was available at the time of writing.

The Ethical Standards Command is investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting on behalf of the State Coroner.

They’ll be assisted by officers from the Crime and Corruption Commission.

UPDATE at 12:30 PM | A MAN has been rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries after being shot by police in Brisbane.

Scores of detectives and unformed police remain at the scene of the shooting on Goulburn Street at Wakerley, in the city’s east.

The Queensland Police Service released a statement a short time ago, confirming a man had been shot during a ‘disturbance’.

It’s understood police were responding to a domestic violence-related call out when they were confronted by the man around 9.50am.

Officers allegedly first tried tasering the man but were forced discharge their firearms after he came at them with a knife, the Courier-Mail reported.

First reports by 7 News claimed the man had been shot after he allegedly stabbed a police officer but police say this is not true and confirmed no officers were injured.

The man was rushed to the Princess Alexandra Hospital in a critical condition, police said.

There are reports the man has since died from his injuries, but police have so far been unable to confirm this.

A large crime scene has been established on Goulburn Street, which is crawling with plain-clothed detectives, uniformed police and officers in blue forensic suits.

The Ethical Standards Command is investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting with the assistance of the Crime and Misconduct Commission.

FIRST at 11:00 AM | A MAN has been shot by police in Brisbane.

It happened on Goulburn Street in the affluent suburb of Wakerley, 15km east of the city centre, just before 10am.

Police said officers were responding to a “critical incident”, the details of which are not yet known.

It’s understood a man was shot during a confrontation with police.

The man was rushed to hospital in a critical condition but died shortly after arriving, sources say.

First reports by 7 News claimed the man had been shot after he allegedly stabbed a police officer.

However police say the initial media reports are not true and confirmed no officers have been injured.

“Police are currently responding to a critical incident in Wakerley,” the Queensland Police Service said on Twitter.

“Media reports that an officer was stabbed during the incident are inaccurate.”

Police are yet to reveal exactly what happened and confirm whether or not the man has died from his injuries.

Photos uploaded to social media show emergency services stationed on the corner of Goulburn Street and Mossvale Drive.

A white blood-stained sheet can also be seen laid out on a footpath near a bus stop.

A crime scene has been established and is crawling with both plain-clothed detectives and uniformed officers.
