Man stabbed after walking in on alleged sexual assault of child

A MAN is in police custody after allegedly sexually assaulting a 7-year-old girl and stabbing a man who tried to stop the alleged attack.

The horrific incident unfolded just before 8pm on Thursday, when staff and parents at a dance school in Kogarah noticed the young girl was missing.

It’s understood a 46-year-old man came across the missing girl in the bathroom with another man, aged 54, and a fight broke out.

During the scuffle, the younger man was stabbed in the neck and stomach before witnesses ran to his aid and managed to detain the older man until police arrived on scene.

The older man was arrested and taken to St George Hospital with facial swelling and bruising. He remains under police guard in a stable condition.

The younger man was also taken to St George Hospital for treatment to his stab wounds, while the young girl was transported to Sydney Children’s Hospital for observation.

A crime scene has since been established with investigations ongoing.

Police say the 54-year-old is expected to be released from hospital some time this morning and is likely to be taken to Kogarah Police Station to assist with inquiries.
