Man stabbed outside Gold Coast tavern after fight escalates

A young man has been charged over the alleged stabbing of another man outside a tavern on the Gold Coast overnight.

It unfolded around 9.00pm, when the 20-year-old man and a 30-year-old man became involved in a verbal altercation outside a tavern on Markeri Street in Mermaid Waters.

Police said the fight escalated, with the younger man stabbing the older man in the stomach.

He then fled the scene in a car which was intercepted by officers on Quambone Court at Worongary a short time later.

The man was arrested at the scene and has since been charged with wounding.

He is due to face Southport Magistrates Court today.

The injured man was taken to the Gold Coast University Hospital for treatment to his stab wound, which is not considered to be life threatening.

Police confirmed the pair are known to each other.
