POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a man was struck and killed by a semi-trailer on a highway in the NSW Hunter region.
The horrific accident took place along the M1 at West Wallsend shortly before sundown on Thursday.
Police say a nearby Highway Patrol officer rushed to the aid of the 39-year-old male pedestrian who had been struck in lane one, but he died at the scene.

Part of the motorway was closed for several hours while the scene was examined by forensic investigators.
The 27-year-old male truck driver was taken to John Hunter Hospital for mandatory blood and urine testing.
The crash is being investigated by specialist officers from the Hunter Crash Investigation Unit and they are appealing for anyone with information that may assist their inquiries to contact Crime Stoppers.
