Man struck in the head with hammer in road rage attack

BREAKING NEWS: A MAN has been struck in the head during a violent road rage incident on the Gold Coast this afternoon.

Emergency crews were called to the scene on Olsen Avenue near the intersection of Southport-Nerang Road and Currumburra Road at around 3pm.

Initial information indicated two cars were involved in a minor car accident when the two male drivers exited their vehicles and began arguing.

One man allegedly armed himself with a hammer which he has reportedly used to strike the other man in the back of the head.

It’s understood the offender has since dropped the weapon and has ‘calmed down’.

Horrified witnesses report the hammer is ‘covered in blood’ and say police have detained the offender.

The incident has heavily impacted on afternoon traffic, particularly those heading south on Olsen Avenue, with motorists facing some heavy delays in the area.

The victim was transported to the Gold Coast University Hospital where he was treated for lacerations to his head. It is not yet known how severe his injuries are.

Police are collecting statements from witnesses and the alleged offender is assisting police with their enquiries.
