Man to be released from jail 39 years after being wrongly convicted

A US man, who has spent 39 years behind bars for a crime he didn’t commit, is set to be released.

Ricky Jackson, 57, was sentenced to life in jail over the 1975 murder of an Ohio man based on the lies of a then 12-year-old boy, Eddie Vernon.

Jackson will be freed today after Vernon, now a 57-year-old, recanted his story in a Cleveland court.

In 1975, Mr Vernon told police he had seen Mr Jackson and two brothers, Wiley and Ronnie Bridgeman, murder a money order collector, Harold Franks.

However Mr Vernon was on a school bus at the time of the murder and witnessed nothing.

Ronnie Bridgeman, was released from jail after 25 years, while Wiley is still in jail. Lawyers are now working on getting him released.
