Man under police guard in hospital after woman’s body found tied up in burning home

AN elderly woman’s body has been found tied up inside a burning house in the NSW Hunter region.

A man is under police guard in hospital after crashing his car, allegedly while trying to flee the scene.

Emergency services were called to reports of an explosion at the Rosemount Drive home at Raymond Terrace around 12.30am.

They arrived to find the single-storey brick home well alight.

After extinguishing the raging inferno, firefighters sadly located a woman’s body inside the home.

According to the Sunday Telegraph, the woman was found tied up.

While the body is yet to be formally identified, it is believed to be that of a 76-year-old woman who lives at the address.

Neighbour Peter Kafer told the Telegraph he tried stopping a 69-year-old man from fleeing the burning home, but he took off in a Nissan X-Trail.

After travelling north on the Pacific Highway for almost an hour, the man allegedly lost control of his X-Trail and collided with a truck near Bulahdelah, 75km away around 1.20am.

He sustained serous injuries in the collision and was taken to John Hunter Hospital where he remains this afternoon, under police guard.

The Raymond Terrace home has been declared a crime scene and is being forensically examined.
