Man wanted over sex attack in Australia arrested in New York

A MAN wanted for allegedly sexually assaulting a woman in Sydney hours before flying out of the country has been arrested in the United States.

The 35-year-old Nepalese National is accused of sexually assaulting a 21-year-old woman in a unit at Carlton in June, 2017 before fleeing the country.

Following a protracted international investigation, investigators recently learned the man was staying in New York.

Assisted by the New York City Police Department, NSW Police applied for an arrest warrant and submitted an extradition application to the Attorney General’s Department.

A Federal Warrant was issued and, on Thursday morning, the man was arrested by officers from the United States Marshall Service Task Force in New York.

Extradition proceedings are expected to commence to return the man to Australia, where he will be charged over the 2017 offence.
