Speedy had admitted to shooting Sergeant Hamrey in the cheek with a rifle while on the run from the scene of an armed robbery, but argued it wasn’t an attempt to kill the officer.
After deliberating for four-and-a-half hours, the jury accepted the crown case that Speedy was a determined thief who would rather kill than surrender.
Speedy’s defence team had argued he unintentionally shot the officer while trying to avoid arrest.
