Man and woman killed in single vehicle crash

TWO people have been killed in a shocking crash in far north Queensland.

The accident happened in the Aboriginal Shire of Mapoon, around 860km north of Cairns, shortly after 9 o’clock on Saturday morning.

Police said a vehicle travelling along the Weipa to Mapoon Road flipped and rolled 20km south of the remote town of Mapoon.

Sadly, a 36-year-old man and a 37-year-old woman sustained life-threatening injuries and could not be saved.

The pair died at the scene, police said.

A third person who was also travelling in the vehicle was transported to Weipa Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The state’s Forensic Crash Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding the double fatality.
