Man’s ear partially severed after having schooner glass smashed in his face

A 30-YEAR-OLD man has almost lost an ear after having a schooner glass smashed in his face at a hotel in Nelson Bay, north of Newcastle.

Police said two men started arguing inside the Stockton Street venue shortly before 9pm on Saturday. The dispute quickly escalated and one of the men struck the other in the face with a schooner glass.

The victim’s right ear was partially severed in the attack. Security officers and other patrons worked to stem the bleeding before paramedics arrived.

The 30-year-old was airlifted to the John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle where police say he will undergo surgery.

The other man, who was restrained by security and evicted from the hotel, left the area before police arrived.

Officers saturated the area in the search for the assailant but he could not be found.

The hotel was closed and declared it a crime scene and was crawling with forensic police overnight.

No arrests have been made.
