Manus Island refugee sets himself on fire, in latest of 70 self harm attempts

A man has been hospitalised in critical condition after setting himself on fire on Manus Island yesterday.

The incident reportedly happened in the East Lorengau camp on Monday.

The fire was extinguished quickly, and the 30-year-old Somalian man was taken to a nearby clinic for treatment.

He’s reportedly been discharged already.

The incident is the latest of 70 suicide or self-harm incidents by approximately 50 refugees/asylum seekers on the island since the Australian federal election (not even a month ago).

Other refugees on the island have taken to social media, unsure of how long they can go on.

“This is out of control. Brake your silence.

“Men on Manus are completely depressed and mentally unwell the physical and mental condition are deteriorating day after day,” the Facebook post by Shamindan Kanapadhi read.
