Swift entered with a marching band before bringing the house down as she and Urie soared above the crowd in a floating umbrella chair as acrobats twirled from suspended umbrellas.
Emotions ran high as Mariah Carey took to the stage to belt out a medley of her hits before accepting the Icon Award.
She admitted to being “nervous” and not seeing herself as an ‘Icon’.
During a mostly off-the-cuff speech, Mimi confessed to feeling “like an outsider” and “someone who doesn’t quite belong anywhere”.
“And I still feel like that lost interracial child who had a lot of nerve to believe I could succeed at anything at all in this world,” Carey told the crowd of her peers who were shouting support.
“To my fans, who are unlike any other entity that I’ve ever known. They’ve lifted me out of the depth of hell and brought me back with their devotion and love.
“And to anyone who’s ever told me that a song I wrote helped save your life, I thank you, because you saved mine.”
The high energy show was brought to a close by 90s pop star Paula Abdul, who dedicated the performance to her dad, who recently passed away.
In terms of award winners, the night belonged to rapper Drake who now holds the record for the most won by any artist (previously held by Swift).
