Marijuana crop found growing in secret room underneath home

POLICE have found a marijuana crop growing in a secret room underneath a house on the Gold Coast.

A tip-off from the public led police to the Merrimac home early on Thursday morning.

A search of the property uncovered 28 cannabis plants being grown in an elaborate hydroponic cannabis production room secreted underneath the dwelling.

It’s alleged the occupants of the home had been stealing electricity to power the room.

In a statement, police said officers were “conducting inquiries with a number of people”.

Detective Inspector Glen Donaldson of the Major and Organised Crime Squad praised the local community for their help in identifying the drug house.

“The QPS recognises the importance of forming strong collaborative partnerships with the community to reduce the harm caused by dangerous drugs within our community,” Det Insp Donaldson said.

“The community plays a significant role in the proactive detention of drug suppliers and we commend the local community for their ongoing support of the QPS and our work in keeping Queensland safe.”
