Marmelo Melbourne Cup jockey hit with one month suspension

JOCKEY Hugh Bowman has been hit with a whopping 35-meeting suspension for three charges relating to his Melbourne Cup ride.

Bowman finished in second place on Marmelo at the 158th Melbourne Cup on Tuesday, however his ride was marred after being found guilty of three charges.

As a result, the four-time Cox Plate-winning rider copped a one month ban for careless riding, excessive whip use prior to the final 100m  mark and for weighing in more than half a kilogram over his allowed weight of 55kg.

Five other jockeys, including winning jockey Kerrin McEvoy, were also sanctioned for breaching the whip rule.

McEvoy was slapped with a $3000 fine following his winning ride on Cross Counter after he reportedly used the whip four more times than he was allowed to during the final 400m of the race.
