Mass drug overdose at Gold Coast hospital: reports

THERE has reportedly been a mass drug overdose within a secure unit at a hospital on the Gold Coast.

Multiple patients reportedly overdosed within the mental health ward of Robina Hospital sometime last week.

Shadow Health Minister Ross Bates mentioned the incident during question time in parliament on Thursday.

Ms Bates asked Health Minister Steven Miles if there had been a major security breach at the hospital that resulted in the overdoses.

She said patients were taken to intensive care and dog squad called in as part of a major police investigation.

In response, Mr Miles confirmed the incident and said police found “an empty package that likely did contain a substance that some patients had consumed”.

It is not yet known what drug it was that the patients consumed, or exactly how many ingested it.

Opposition leader Deb Frecklington is expected to join Ms Bates and address the media with further detail later today.
