Massive sinkhole opens up in Ipswich backyard

A massive sinkhole has opened up in the backyard of a home in Ipswich.

Owners of the Coal Street home in Basin Pocket were left shocked when they discovered the six to eight metre hole on Tuesday morning.

Photos and videos posted to social media show the large sinkhole filling up with brown water.

Engineers have since been called in to assess the damage.

There are reports the sinkhole may have been caused by underground mines.
