Matildas lose World Cup opener

THE MATILDAS have suffered a shock loss in their World Cup opener, going down to Italy 2-1.

Sam Kerr’s debut goal put Australia ahead for the majority of the match before a double to Italy’s Barbara Bonansea saw the undergoes clinch victory in the final minute of extra time.

Kerr was visibly upset with the loss, throwing her armband to the ground on the full-time whistle.

Australia will now need a result when they take on Brazil in their second match in four days time.

Coach Ante Milicic admits there is a lot more work that needs to be done.

“When we played our football we looked decent, but it was only in patches,” he said.

“We need to be a little bit more brave and composed on the ball.”

“We need to have a better understanding when to drop and when to stay high, and the position of the goalkeeper.

“We need to quickly regroup and focus on the Brazil game.”
