Mayoress recovering from heart attack overseas

Mayor Tom Tate has spent the past week at his wife’s bedside after a major health scare during what was to be a two-week overseas holiday.

Cr Tate and wife Ruth had flown from Brisbane to Singapore last Thursday and were relaxing during a stop-over at Changi Airport, on their way to Rome, when the Mayoress “suffered a cardiac arrest” just moments before boarding her plane.

She was rushed to hospital and placed in an induced coma.

A spokesperson for Cr Tate confirmed Mrs Tate has since been brought out of the coma and is sitting up and talking with her husband who hasn’t left her side.

In a statement, Cr Tate said the couple hoped to return home soon.

“I thank everyone for their well wishes and we are blessed that she is making a full recovery,” the statement reads.

“We expect to return home to the Gold Coast in the near future.”

It’s believed she will spend up to another week in hospital before possibly being cleared to fly home.

The couple will now postpone their holiday, which was to include a cruise.

Cr Tate was hoping to get some insight into the cruise industry, as he continues to work with companies to build a cruise ship terminal on the Gold Coast.

The Council spokesperson confirmed the trip had been paid for by Mr Tate and not from Council coffers.
