GOLD COAST families will be swapping the picnic blankets for the couch for this year’s Mayor Christmas Carols.
Due to expected restrictions surrounding the gathering of crowds, City of Gold Coast has decided to take the event online.
While we may miss the opportunity to sing together at the Broadwater Parklands, we won’t be missing out on star-studded performancea.

Mayor Tom Tate has confirmed a stellar line up for the virtual event including Anthony Callea, Casey Barnes and Kate Ceberano.
“Santa is coming COVID or not,” Mayor Tom Tate said.
“So while it’s disappointing we can’t all be there together for this wonderful tradition, the quality of the talent who will be singing carols and Christmas songs for our city is unprecedented.
“I’d encourage everyone to tune in with their families for what will be a truly unique, exciting and fun experience.”
Exactly how the event will work has yet to be confirmed but it’s expected artists will be performing live from wherever they may be stationed around the country rather than all together.
The free virtual event to be simulcast on the City’s website, Facebook page and aired on 102.9 Hot Tomato.
Gold Coaster Casey Barnes said while he’ll miss the live crowd, he’s looking forward to the event.
“This year’s been a very challenging year but it’s been one where you’ve got to adapt to the changes and just go with the flow,” Barnes said.
“There’s not much you can do about it.
“For carols to still go ahead this year virtually it’s a great thing and it’s going to bring some smiles to faces.
“I’m stoked to be part of it.”
Christmas Carols events in Broadbeach and Surfers Paradise have also been cancelled as well as the much-loved Christmas lights competition.
“This was not an easy decision to make but we couldn’t take risks in this current environment,” the Mayor said.
“It doesn’t mean you can’t put your lights up.
“It’s just that we can’t encourage competition and be the conduit to mass gathering.”
The Mayor’s Christmas Carols presented by Mercedes-Benz Gold Coast and supported by 102.9 Hot Tomato and Nine News Gold Coast will be aired on Saturday December 5 at 6pm.
