Medicare details being sold online by ‘darknet’ trader

For sale: Medicare details for as little as $30.

The Federal Government has confirmed, it is looking into claims a “darknet” trader is selling the Medicare Card details of Australians.

An investigation by The Guardian has revealed the data can be bought online for less than $30.

“It’s very alarming to me if any of that data is finding its way into hands that it shouldn’t be,” Assistant Treasurer Michael Sukkar told Sky News.

He admitted the online storage of personal information means “governments are going to have to be much better at protecting that data”.

“All I can do is assure you that we will do absolutely everything possible to protect that data,” he said.
