Melbourne Cup expected to draw thousands

More than 100,000 punters are expected to don their finest suits and fascinators at Flemington Racecourse for the Melbourne Cup today.

It’s the 156th year running for the richest handicap in the world and biggest sporting prize in Australia.

Favourites to cross the line first include Godolphin’s Hartnell and Oceanographer, and Australian-bred Jameka.


Some of the country’s biggest celebrities are also expected to make an appearance in the exclusive Birdcage enclosure.

Chris Hemsworth’s wife and successful actress and model Elsa Pataky, will be one of the biggest names at the marquees.

Former Australian Idol contestant, and our 2016 Eurovision entry Dami Im will perform the national anthem ahead of the main race at 3pm AEDT.

The Melbourne Cup is also a spectacle for fashion and style, with some serious contenders expected for the fashions on the field.

Unfortunately weather is not expected to cooperate for the Race that stops the nation, with 50 per cent chance of rain predicted.
