Mercedes stopped by road spikes during wild police pursuit

Police have been forced to deploy road spikes to stop a Mercedes that was fleeing officers in Ipswich overnight.

It all unfolded around 9.15pm, when the police chopper spotted a black Mercedes bearing false number plates driving dangerously and at high speed through Brisbane towards Ipswich.

Officers on the ground managed to deploy a tyre deflation device on the Warrego Highway in Marburg just before 10.00pm.

However, the car continued to drive on the highway, forcing police to enter a pursuit that ended shortly after when the vehicle came to a stop as a result of the tyres disintegrating.

The driver, a 29-year-old Collingwood Park man was arrested at the scene.

He has since been charged with multiple dangerous driving, evasion and property offences.

The man is expected to appear before the Ipswich Magistrates Court on May 25.
