The Christmas tree may still be up, but apparently it’s time to start thinking about the next holiday, with Hot Cross buns already on shelves across the country.

Coles has officially kicked off the hot cross bun war, launching a limited edition Vegemite hot cross bun in partnership with Bega Cheese.
While the much-loved original hot cross buns hit shelves as soon as Boxing Day, the new savoury treats will be making their first appearance today at more than 700 stores across the country.
Coles General Manager of Bakery, Deli and Seafood Andy Mossop said the mashup of the two iconic Aussie favourites was a no-brainer.
“We know how much our customers love hot cross buns, and we know how much they love VEGEMITE, so we decided to merge these two icons to create a delicious, savoury spin on hot cross buns that champions iconic Aussie flavours,” he said.
“Our teams have put a lot of time and work into fine-tuning the recipe to ensure we have the perfect flavour profile so the signature VEGEMITE savouriness shines through in a way we know our customers are going to love.”
The limited-edition hot cross buns are infused with vegemite and parmesan and finished with a tasty cheese topping.
Mr Mossop said they’re “best toasted and slathered with butter or grilled toasted sandwich style with lots of melty cheese”.
Woolworths is yet to reveal when their hot cross buns will hit stores, or what varieties they will have on offer this year.
“Our team has been baking up some exciting new flavours as part of our hot cross buns range this year, and we’re looking forward to delivering customers indulgent and innovative treats to help close off 2021,” a Woolworths spokesperson said.
“We encourage customers to keep an eye for an Australian-first exclusive announcement over the coming days.”
