Mexican president cancels Trump meeting

Mexico’s President has scrapped a planned summit with Donald Trump following tweets from the US president demanding Mexico pay for his planned wall between the two nations.

In the style of Mr Trump, President Enrique Pena Nieto made the announcement on Twitter.

Translation: This morning we have informed the White House that I will not attend the meeting scheduled for next Tuesday with the @.

Mr Trump, who views the wall as a major part of his election campaign to curb illegal immigration, then agreed on Twitter that if Mexico will not foot the bill, the President shouldn’t attend.

An executive order for construction of the wall was signed by the US president on Wednesday, the same day that Mexico’s foreign minister held talks with Mr Trump’s aides in the White House aimed at healing ties.

Relations between the nations have frayed since the launch of Trump’s campaign in 2015, when he called Mexican migrants murderers and rapists.

“The US has a 60 billion dollar ($A80 billion) trade deficit with Mexico. It has been a one-sided deal from the beginning of NAFTA with massive numbers… of jobs and companies lost. If Mexico is unwilling to pay for the badly needed wall, then it would be better to cancel the upcoming meeting,” Trump said on Twitter.

The projected cost of the wall is between $US12 billion and $US15 billion, which Mr Trump told ABC News Mexico would eventually reimburse the United States for.
