Michael Diamond’s selection for Rio Games in serious doubt

A familiar face is now no longer expected to compete at the upcoming Rio Olympics.

Champion shooter Michael Diamond was arrested and charged with high-range drink driving on Saturday night.  It’s also alleged that he had his shotgun in his car with him at the time.

The weekend drama reportedly played out after an argument with his brother at Nelson Bay near Newcastle.

Officers found Diamond standing next to his car in the suburb of Shoal Bay. He was arrested after police allegedly found his shotgun and 150 rounds of ammunition inside the car.

It’s also alleged that he refused to be breath tested at the scene but later returned a result three times the legal limit.

He’ll face court next month, which his brother has also taken out an apprehended violence order against him.

Rio in August would have marked his seventh Olympic Games.  His selection has been under a cloud anyway, with younger competitor Mitchells Isles threatening to take his spot.
