Migaloo the white whale likely to pass through Gold Coast tonight

Sorry Gold Coasters, but it looks like we may miss out on seeing our good friend Migaloo pass through our waters.

The rare white humpback is currently on his journey north to the Great Barrier Reef as part of his annual migration from Antartica to Queensland and was reportedly spotted at Lennox Head around 3.30pm on Wednesday.

Retro Campervans confirmed the exciting news in a post on social media a short time ago.

“Migaloo spotted! This was our best shot of the rare, 15 metre long, 40 tonne Humpback Whale Migaloo as he breached & played, tracking north past Sharpe’s Beach, Skennars Head, an hour ago!” they wrote alongside a snap of the iconic whale.

It means he should pass the Gold Coast sometime tonight, which is bad news for those who were hoping to catch a glimpse of the rare white whale.

“His journey originated in the Antarctic Ocean, tracking 7500Kms north. We’re expecting the ‘White Fella’ (indigenous/English translation) to be passing @destinationgoldcoast & @visitbrisbane this evening, bound for the breeding waters of the @southerngreatbarrierreef In @queensland,” Retro Campervans wrote.

The new sighting comes after he was spotted off the New South Wales South Coast on Tuesday.

Migaloo’s journey is believed to be a little earlier than usual this year, with the famous humpback previously spotted around July and August.

According to experts, the migration depends on water temperatures, predators and food availability.
