Missing surfer found ‘safe at home’ after major search

A surfer who was reported missing in surf in Sydney’s east yesterday, sparking a frantic search, has been found safe and sound at home.

Police were called to Coogee Beach just after 5.00pm on Tuesday following reports a surfer appeared to be struggling in the water.

Officers were told a man on a long blue surfboard appeared to be in some difficulties in the large and powerful surf conditions, about 200 metres offshore.

As a result, police conducted a search of the area which was called off overnight before resuming again this morning.

However, following a public appeal, a man contacted officers on Wednesday after realising he may be the surfer at the centre of the search.

“Officers attended a Coogee home and spoke to a 31-year-old man, who has been identified as the missing surfer,” NSW Police said.

“He had made his way to shore and was unaware of the search.”
