Mother and father on trial over horrific head injuries to 13-day-old child

A trial is now underway after a mother and father pleaded not guilty to causing horrific injuries to their 13-day-old baby.

Southport Court has today heard of the injuries the baby boy suffered, which caused him to need emergency brain surgery in 2014.

The infant was diagnosed with a fractured skull and brain bleeding.

A married couple – understood to be the parents of the baby – have been accused on inflicting the severe injuries.

The pair both pleaded not guilty to cruelty and grievous bodily harm.

Today, Prosecutor Matthew Hynes told the jury that either the mother or father was responsible for the injuries that “effectively destroyed half his brain.”

The couple cannot legally be named, though the mother is believed to be a childcare worker, and the father has historically been convicted of assault.

The father allegedly told police he accidentally dropped his baby, while the mother allegedly told her mother-in-law that she’d thrown the baby on the bed and he bounced off.

It’s understood at least 15 witnesses will give evidence during the trial, and that it could last longer than four weeks.
