Mother charged after baby found ‘abandoned’ in unit

A MOTHER has been charged after allegedly abandoning her three-month-old daughter in Sydney.

Police were called to the woman’s Fisher Street unit in Cabramatta about 11.30am on Wednesday after Sheriff’s Officers allegedly found the infant alone in the unit, laying in a bassinet.

The child was taken to Westmead Hospital for treatment and a child at risk notification was made to the Department of Family and Community Services.

Police said the baby’s 28-year-old mother returned to the unit around 90 minutes later, about 1pm.

She was arrested and taken to Fairfield Police Station where she was charged with abandoning a child under the age of seven causing danger of serious injury (domestic violence related).

Police allege the woman left the baby unattended for “several hours”.

The woman was remanded in custody overnight and due to appear in Liverpool Local Court today.

Alternate care arrangements have been made for the woman’s daughter.
