Sentencing hearing continues for mother after death of Gold Coast toddler Tyrell Cobb

UPDATE @ November 9, 7.20am: The mother of a Gold Coast toddler who died eight years ago is due to be sentenced in Brisbane’s Supreme Court today.

Heidi Strbak is facing day three of her three-day contested sentencing after last week pleading guilty to the manslaughter of her four-year-old son Tyrell Cobb on the basis of criminal negligence.

On Wednesday, Strbak’s ex partner, who has also pleaded guilty to manslaughter of Cobb, told the Brisbane Supreme Court she “used cannabis daily”.

“When she wasn’t smoking pot, she used to not have patience with him,” Scown said.

Scown was sentenced to four years’ jail for manslaughter in October, however his sentence was suspended immediately given time already served in custody.

Tyrell Cobb, 4, died after being found with horrific injuries at a house on the Gold Coast in May, 2009.

The prosecution is arguing Strbak was responsible for the blunt force trauma that caused Cobb’s death, however she denies the accusation.

EARLIER @ November 8, 6.55am: THE sentencing hearing for a Gold Coast woman who pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of her toddler son is set to continue in Brisbane’s Supreme Court today.

Heidi Strbak is facing a three-day contested sentencing after last week pleading guilty to manslaughter on the basis of criminal negligence.

Tyrell Cobb, 4, died after being found with horrific injuries at a house on the Gold Coast in May, 2009.

On the first day of sentencing yesterday, the court was shown confronting images of Cobb’s bruised body.

Ms Strbak’s lawyer is arguing that his client was not responsible for the blunt force trauma that caused Cobb’s death, stating her ex-partner Matthew Scown or the child’s uncle could have caused the injury.

Scown was sentenced to four years’ jail for manslaughter in October, however his sentence was suspended immediately given time already served in custody.
