Former MotoGP champion Nicky Hayden has died, five days after being hit by a car.
The 35-year-old was cycling through eastern Italy when he was struck on 17 May.
Hayden’s Honda World Superbike team confirmed the tragic news in a statement overnight.

“It is with great sadness that Red Bull Honda has to announce that Nicky Hayden has succumbed to injuries suffered during an incident while riding his bicycle last Wednesday,” the statement read.
“Nicky passed away at 19:09 CEST this evening at Maurizio Bufalini Hospital in Cesena, Italy. His fiancée Jackie, mother Rose and brother Tommy were at his side.”
Tributes have already started flowing for the American motorcycle racer.
“Thankful for the time that I was privileged to know you! Pray for his family during this time. We’ll miss you mate!” Two-time MotoGP World Champion Casey Stoner tweeted.
