A MAN was thrown from his motorcycle and killed when it hit an emu on a dirt road in the New South Wales Riverina region.

Police said the 69-year-old man from Frenchs Forest was riding his bike along a service road at Mt Hope, north of Griffith, when the crash happened about midday on Saturday.

“A friend of the rider, a 55-year-old man from Werombi, who was following, told police the rider was thrown about 30m,” a police spokesperson said.

“He rendered assistance and called NSW Ambulance Paramedics to the scene.”

The man was rushed to Lake Cargelligo District Hospital where he died a short time later.

The wild emu died at the scene.
