Pedestrian struck by car on Gold Coast Highway in “serious condition”

A MAN remains in a serious condition in hospital this morning after being struck by a car in Southport last night.

The 45-year-old man was crossing the Gold Coast Highway, otherwise known as Marine Parade, near Railway Street when he was hit by a southbound ute just before 6pm.

Paramedics raced to the scene and worked on the victim in the middle of the road for around half-an-hour.

Once stable, the man was then placed on a stretcher and wheeled into the back of an ambulance.

Police said the man was taken to the Gold Coast University Hospital in a serious condition.

Peak-hour traffic was thrown into disarray in the area following the incident.

Southbound lanes were closed between North and Nind streets for several hours while the Forensic Crash Unit investigated the scene. The highway was reopened around 8pm.

Police spoke with the driver of the ute at the scene and he continues to assist police with their inquiries.

The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating.
